This position will have a shared focus on providing educational advocacy and community engagement.
The education advocate will provide advocacy to parents and families of children who have received, or are at-risk of receiving, exclusionary school discipline. The advocate will empower families as they navigate school conferences, meetings, and hearings, including principal meetings, Suspension Hearings, Committee on Special Education meetings, and other school meetings as appropriate.
Outreach to families and communities that have been traditionally adversely impacted by exclusionary school discipline. Develop working relationships across multiple networks, identifying potential collaborations, advocates and allies.
Other duties include:
- Provide trainings in education rights and advocacy to students, parents and relevant professionals;
- Representing LIAC at conferences, community events, seminars, and public hearings;
- Conducting community outreach, especially in under-served communities, through: speaking engagements, participating in community events, creating/distributing LIAC literature, and developing a social media presence;
- Provide information and referral services to clients seeking help outside the scope of what LIAC provides;
- Work closely with families, schools, and community agencies, in addition to LIAC staff to achieve desired goals;
- Plan and lead communication and social media efforts to outreach and engage with the community regarding school discipline, equitable access to education, and advancement of identified goals;
- Produce advocacy and outreach materials including letters, flyers, and digital content to advance program efforts.
Qualifications:
- College degree (or equivalent, if program contract allows);
- Strong public speaking skills;
- Cultural Competence;
- Family/Youth Focused;
- Car and valid driver’s license;
- Knowledge of public school system;
- Ability to navigate digital platforms, present and engage in remote meetings and presentations, and effectively utilize social media to communicate messages;
- Excellent organizational skills including a high level of attention to detail;
- Professional and interpersonal skills to effectively communicate in an engaging manner with community partners, parents, and other stakeholders across a variety of platforms, both written and oral;
- Ability to work in a flexible manner with a willingness to tackle various tasks.
Salary $38,000-$40,000 depending on experience.
